DCIM: what to monitor before the first alarm appears
DCIM helps monitor temperature, humidity, power, alarms, energy use and the condition of Data Center infrastructure.

The worst alarm in a server room is the one that becomes the first sign of a problem. If the team learns about overheating only when devices throttle or shut down, monitoring is already late.
DCIM should provide visibility before a small anomaly becomes an outage. In practice, it is not enough to monitor room temperature. Important points include air inlet temperature, humidity, UPS status, PDU load, cooling alarms, cabinet door opening, smoke, water leakage and energy use.
DCIM also supports planning. If you can see which racks are most loaded electrically and thermally, it is easier to decide where new equipment can be installed and where power or cooling should be improved first.
In small and medium server rooms, it is reasonable to start with the basics: temperature, humidity, power and environmental alarms. Monitoring that nobody checks is decoration. Monitoring that supports decisions is real protection.
Checklist
- Monitor temperature at IT equipment air inlets, not only on the room wall.
- Track humidity, UPS status and PDU load.
- Set warning thresholds before critical conditions appear.
- Keep historical data for capacity planning.
- Make sure alarms reach people who can react.
