Five questions to ask before buying server room infrastructure
Before buying server room infrastructure, check power, cooling, redundancy, monitoring, service and future expansion requirements.
Buying server room infrastructure is rarely a single decision. UPS selection affects cooling, cooling depends on rack layout, PDUs organize power and monitoring shows whether the whole environment is stable.
The first question is: what is the real IT power today and in two years? Without this, it is easy to buy a system that is too small or unnecessarily oversized. The second question is how much heat must be removed and from where.
The third question is what can fail without stopping operation. This leads to redundancy. The fourth question concerns monitoring: will the administrator see rising temperature, PDU overload or a UPS alarm before users report a problem?
The fifth question is who will maintain the infrastructure after purchase. Delivery is only the beginning. Service, technical information, expansion options and response to abnormal operating conditions matter just as much as the equipment model.
