Server room temperature: when comfort air conditioning is no longer enough
Precision cooling keeps stable operating conditions for IT infrastructure 24/7, which standard comfort air conditioning is not designed to provide.

A server room and an office may look like they have the same problem: too much heat. In reality the operating conditions are different. Comfort air conditioning is designed for people, variable occupancy and partial-day operation. IT infrastructure produces heat continuously, locally and without breaks.
The key question is not only whether the unit can cool the room. It is whether it can maintain stable temperature under changing IT load, operate all year round and support control of humidity and airflow. In a server room, predictability matters. Short overheating events can reduce equipment life or trigger emergency shutdowns.
Precision cooling is designed for technological heat, not human comfort. It can be implemented as room, in-row, rack or free-cooling assisted systems. Selection depends on heat load, rack layout, available space, redundancy and future expansion.
In small server rooms the biggest issue is often not cooling capacity but airflow. Cold air mixes with hot air, racks are placed randomly and devices pull air from the wrong side. Cooling should therefore be analyzed together with rack layout, power distribution and monitoring.
Checklist
- Calculate the heat generated by IT equipment.
- Confirm whether cooling must operate 24/7 all year.
- Check airflow through racks and the room.
- Decide whether cooling redundancy is required.
- Monitor temperature in several points, not only next to the cooling unit.
